Gerçek olaylara dayanan müzikal “Ann Lee”, dini lider Ann Lee hakkında “destansı bir masal” olarak tanımlanıyor. 1736 yılında İngiltere'de doğan Ann Lee, 1774 yılında küçük bir takipçi grubuyla birlikte New York'a göç etti ve burada en önemli isimlerden biri oldu. O zamanlar Lee az sayıdaki kadın dini liderden biriydi. Shaker hareketini kurdu, Kadın Mesih ilan edildi ve Amerikan tarihinin en büyük ütopik toplumlarından birini kurdu.
